catch on to

i want to reach out and catch on to something
red, black, green, blue… anything
that is going by
pulling me with it,
on to places
unknown
full of wonder
birds and lights
music and bright motorcycles
driving headlong into the night
filled with stars and the scent of moon flowers
all disappearing at the sign of first light
returning me to my perch when i will continue
my search for something to catch on to

door 521

one flight up and through
door 521 is the first real
home where i lived
alone, my life solitary,
not lonely, full of life,
full of music and light.

a place, where i learned
things, about life, about
love, about death and
mortality, about the
nature of being human,
about human nature,
i learned about how
to be a friend, and how
to deal with betrayal,

i learned about music,
about sex, i learned
to appreciate the sound
of freedom, even in
the middle of a migraine

i learned how to write,
how to get deep down
inside and express the
deepest and the darkest

i learned how to escape
into myself, i learned what
depression really is

but most of all, wrapping
all these things and more
together i learned
what it is to be me

alarms going off

hand through the wall
alarms going off
neighbor at the door
alarms going off

I need to see you now
alarms going off
can you make it tonight
alarms going off

turn the tv up louder
alarms going off
no screams can be heard
alarms going off

men with guns breach the perimeter
alarms going off
my pistol at the ready
alarms going off

awesome! sudden silence
no feeling in my limbs
a needle in my arm
no one recognizable around

no alarms

exhausted I sleep and sleep
this is a safe place
these people want to help me
promise to let me see you soon

our way

watch dolphins surf on chartreuse clouds
see pelicans skim beneath the moon
observe whales breaching through the starlit sky

let the imagination run as wild as it was born
turn small ideas into grand designs
write symphonies on the backs of paper plates

run through a grape juice sprinkler on a hot august day
count the eternities we linger over a kiss
fight back the angels sent to take us home

these are our lives and we want to experience them in our way
